2007 District 2X-1 Mid-Winter Conference



The Oak Cliff Lions Club Hosted the 2007 Lions District 2-X1 Mid-Winter Conference on January 27, 2007, at Tyler Street United Methodist Church.  Nearly 300 Lions from around the five-County District, including some 70 Oak Cliff Lions, attended the day-long event.

President Rich Buickerood opened the morning festivities in traditional Lions fashion, following music by the “Nitty Gritty Band”, and presented a check to District Governor Carolyn Dorman for $20,000.00 from the Club for the District’s Lions Sight and Tissue Mobile Bus Project.  A wonderful Brunch was served, Lions visited and viewed Lions Charities displays and Pin Traders and then took part in two Break-Out Sessions of three Lions Topics each, all of which were well attended.

The Club then provided lunch and Lion Past President Dan Cunningham wowed the audience with his piano talent. Guest Speaker, humorist, novelist Dr. Don Newbury had the crowd in stitches with his humor and unique style. Winners of the District Speech Contest, Oustanding Student, Diabetic Contest, and Peace Poster Contest were all announced. A special Induction Ceremont was held for all new Lions joining since July 2006.  District Governor Dorman then announced that Past District Governor Bill Melton had been selected by the District for Induction into the Texas Lions Hall of Fame at the Lions State Convention in June.  The Luncheon concluded with an actress imulating Helen Keller who gave Ms. Keller’s famous speech to the 1937 Lions International Convention, asking Lions to become “Knights of the Blind”.

The formal portion of the Conference then concluded and the District Governor held the third Cabinet Meeting of the District for the 2006-07 year.

Oak Cliff Lions Past President and Past District Governor Bill Melton Chaired theConference, aided by Co-Chairs  Immediate Past Club President Amy Alburtis and Past President/Past District Governor Wayne Meachum.  They were assisted by Committee Chairs Lions Stan Altshuler, Steve Bayless, Al Bell, Danny Boyce, Larry Frazier, Lisa Hembry, Past President Robert Hirsh, Joe Jessing, Chris King, Diana LaQuey, Kathie Magers, Roger Pickett, Past President/Past Cabinet Secretary Mark Snyder, Charlie Tupper, Teresa Wash, Ann Washburn, and Darla Wisdom.

The Oak Cliff Lions Club had not Sponsored a major District event in many, many years, but January 27, 2007, will be marked as a  day of very successful organization, work, pride and dedication to the ideals of Lionism, "We Serve", by the members of the Oak Cliff Lions Club.
